Induction chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemotherapy is a treatment protocol investigated by Sun Yat-sen University for the management of high-risk T3N1M0 nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The regimen involves an induction phase consisting of three cycles of either gemcitabine plus cisplatin (GP) or docetaxel, cisplatin, and fluorouracil (TPF). This is followed by a concurrent chemoradiotherapy phase where cisplatin is administered alongside intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). The protocol is currently being evaluated in a multicenter randomized Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT05622474) to determine if the addition of induction chemotherapy provides a survival benefit over concurrent chemoradiotherapy alone in this specific patient population. The active ingredients are standard cytotoxic small molecules that target DNA synthesis and cellular division.
