Inflexal V is a virosome-based, inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine. It contains highly purified surface antigens (haemagglutinins) from three influenza virus strains, which are selected annually based on recommendations by health authorities. The vaccine is produced by growing flu viruses in chicken eggs, inactivating them with β-propiolactone, and purifying the haemagglutinin proteins. These proteins are then combined with natural lipids to form virosomes that act as both carrier and adjuvant, enhancing immune response while maintaining antigen presentation similar to the native virus. Inflexal V was shown to be highly immunogenic and well tolerated across age groups but was discontinued after 2011 following Crucell's acquisition by Johnson & Johnson. Its primary indication was for the prevention of influenza infection.
