Overview

An influenza vaccine specifically formulated against the 2009 pandemic H1N1 strain A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)v. It has been available in two primary formulations: an inactivated split-virion intramuscular vaccine and a live-attenuated, cold-adapted, temperature‑sensitive intranasal vaccine. The inactivated vaccine contains 15 mcg hemagglutinin per 0.5 mL dose and induces protective antibodies against H1N1 by presenting viral antigens without replication. The live-attenuated intranasal vaccine replicates locally in the nasopharynx to elicit mucosal and systemic immunity. Primary indication is active immunization to prevent influenza disease caused by pandemic H1N1 2009 virus in approved age groups. Multiple manufacturers produced monovalent H1N1 vaccines under public health emergency programs beginning in 2009.
