Overview

The influenza A (H5N1) virus monovalent vaccine is an inactivated split-virus biologic developed for the prevention of avian influenza (bird flu). It contains hemagglutinin (HA) from the A/Indonesia/05/2005 strain and was evaluated in clinical trials sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The vaccine is often administered with the AS03 adjuvant, an oil-in-water emulsion containing squalene, DL-α-tocopherol, and polysorbate 80, which is manufactured by GSK. This adjuvanted formulation is designed to enhance immunogenicity and provide broader cross-protection against heterologous H5N1 strains. The vaccine itself has been manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur and GSK for use in NIAID-led systems biology studies.
