Overview

Influenza A (H5N1) virus vaccine is an inactivated monovalent vaccine indicated for active immunization to prevent disease caused by the H5N1 subtype of the influenza A virus. It is primarily used for individuals at increased risk of exposure to H5N1 avian influenza. The most widely available formulation in the United States is adjuvanted with either AS03 or MF59 to enhance immune response and enable dose sparing. The antigen component consists of inactivated split-virion H5N1 propagated in embryonated hen’s eggs and then chemically inactivated. The mechanism of action involves stimulating an immune response against hemagglutinin (HA), the primary surface glycoprotein on the H5N1 virus responsible for viral entry into host cells. This leads to production of neutralizing antibodies that protect against infection[2][3][6]. AUDENZ is one approved brand name manufactured by Seqirus[5]. Other manufacturers have produced similar vaccines globally.
