Overview

The influenza A (H7N9) virus vaccine is an investigational or stockpiled vaccine developed to protect against infection by the avian-origin H7N9 subtype of the influenza A virus. This subtype has caused several outbreaks in China since 2013, with a high case fatality rate and pandemic potential. The vaccines are typically inactivated or recombinant formulations designed to induce immune responses against the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase proteins of H7N9 viruses. While no H7N9 vaccines have been licensed for general human use as of 2024, several candidates have undergone preclinical and clinical development, showing protective benefits in animal models and robust antibody responses in humans[1][3][5]. Companies such as Sinovac have developed proprietary versions using established flu vaccine platforms[6]. These vaccines may be stockpiled for emergency use during outbreaks.
