Overview

A monovalent subvirion A/H1N1 influenza vaccine with adjuvant is an inactivated, split-virus (subvirion) influenza vaccine formulated to provide active immunization against the H1N1 subtype of the Influenza A virus. The "monovalent" designation indicates that it targets only one strain—specifically, the pandemic H1N1 strain (such as A/California/07/2009). The "subvirion" form means the virus has been disrupted and purified to contain mainly hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigens. An added adjuvant (such as AS03 or Alhydrogel) enhances immune response by stimulating stronger and broader antibody production. These vaccines are typically administered intramuscularly and were developed for rapid deployment during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic[3][8]. Mechanistically, they work by presenting viral antigens to the immune system, prompting production of neutralizing antibodies; the adjuvants further boost this response through mechanisms such as depot effect, cytokine upregulation, increased antigen uptake by antigen-presenting cells, and activation of innate immunity[6]. Primary indication is prevention of infection caused by pandemic H1N1 influenza.
