Overview

An influenza A H3N2 vaccine is a biological preparation designed to provide active acquired immunity against the H3N2 subtype of the influenza A virus. H3N2 is a major cause of seasonal influenza and is known for its high rate of antigenic drift, necessitating frequent updates to vaccine strains. These vaccines typically target the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) surface glycoproteins of the virus. While most seasonal vaccines are quadrivalent (containing H1N1, H3N2, and two B strains), monovalent H3N2 vaccines are often used in clinical research to evaluate immunogenicity against specific emerging strains or as part of pandemic preparedness strategies. Modalities include inactivated virus, live-attenuated virus, recombinant proteins, and more recently, mRNA-based platforms.
