Overview

The influenza trivalent inactivated vaccine (IIV3 or TIV) is a synthetic biologic vaccine that contains three inactivated (killed) strains of the influenza virus—two type A strains (H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes) and one type B strain (Victoria lineage). It is administered by injection and works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against these specific viral antigens. The primary indication is the prevention of seasonal influenza infection. The mechanism of action involves exposure to viral hemagglutinin proteins from each included strain; this induces an adaptive immune response without causing disease. Trivalent vaccines are recommended for all individuals aged 6 months and older. Multiple pharmaceutical companies develop and manufacture these vaccines globally[1][3][4][5].
