Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The MF59 adjuvanted influenza vaccine is an inactivated subunit influenza vaccine formulated with the proprietary squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant MF59. Marketed under brand names such as Fluad and Vantaflu, the vaccine contains purified surface antigens (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase) from seasonal influenza virus strains. The addition of the MF59 adjuvant enhances the immune response by promoting local cytokine production and recruiting antigen-presenting cells, which is particularly beneficial in overcoming immunosenescence in older adults aged 65 and above. Originally developed by Chiron and Ciba-Geigy, the product line was acquired by Novartis in 2006 and subsequently by Seqirus (a CSL company) in 2015. Korea University Guro Hospital has also been a key clinical developer and sponsor of phase 4 trials evaluating the vaccine's immunogenicity and safety in South Korea.
