Drug intelligence / Profile preview
GSK2321138A is a quadrivalent, inactivated, split-virion influenza vaccine developed by GSK and marketed under the brand names Fluarix Tetra and Influsplit Tetra. It is designed to provide active immunization against four strains of the influenza virus: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). The vaccine is produced by growing the viruses in embryonated chicken eggs, followed by inactivation with formaldehyde, disruption (splitting) with sodium deoxycholate, and purification of the hemagglutinin antigens. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibodies that neutralize the virus and prevent infection. The vaccine has been evaluated in multiple Phase III clinical trials, including studies comparing different manufacturing processes (intermediate vs. large-scale) to ensure consistency in safety and immunogenicity across adult and pediatric populations.
