GSK's trivalent seasonal influenza vaccine is an inactivated, split-virion biologic indicated for the prevention of disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and type B. As a trivalent inactivated vaccine (IIV3), it contains antigens—specifically the hemagglutinin (HA) surface protein—from three distinct viral strains: two influenza A strains (typically H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B strain (from either the Victoria or Yamagata lineage). The vaccine is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) under brand names such as Fluarix and FluLaval. It works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the included strains. In recent years, trivalent formulations have been largely replaced by quadrivalent vaccines (e.g., Fluarix Quadrivalent) to provide broader protection against both circulating B-virus lineages.
