Overview

A combination vaccine comprising **inactivated influenza virus surface antigens** (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase) from selected circulating strains, **adjuvanted with MF59C.1**, an oil-in-water emulsion-based adjuvant containing squalene. It is designed primarily to enhance the immune response, particularly in older adults (≥65 years). MF59C.1 increases and broadens antigen-specific immunity by promoting local inflammation, recruiting immune cells (notably CD11b+ inflammatory cells) to the injection site, and enhancing both humoral (antibody) and cellular immune responses, including improved T follicular helper and germinal center B cell responses. The formulation and included viral strains are updated annually to match circulating influenza subtypes. Its primary indication is the prevention of influenza.
