Overview
The H5 vaccine described is an MF59-adjuvanted, inactivated subunit H5N1 pandemic influenza vaccine. It contains hemagglutinin (HA) surface antigens derived from avian influenza strains, specifically the A/Vietnam/1194/2004 (clade 1) strain. The vaccine utilizes the MF59 adjuvant, a proprietary oil-in-water emulsion, to enhance the magnitude and breadth of the immune response, particularly in populations with lower vaccine responsiveness such as older adults. It is designed to elicit neutralizing antibodies against the H5 protein and induce immunologic memory for pandemic preparedness. Clinical evaluation led by the University of Leicester has focused on heterosubtypic immune responses and cross-reactivity against multiple H5N1 clades.
