Overview

a/h5n1 antigen + as03 adjuvant refers to a pandemic influenza vaccine developed by GSK, most notably marketed under the brand name Prepandrix. It is an inactivated, split-virion vaccine containing antigens from the H5N1 strain of Influenza A virus (specifically the A/Vietnam/1194/2004 strain). The vaccine is formulated with the AS03 adjuvant system, which is an oil-in-water emulsion composed of squalene, DL-alpha-tocopherol, and polysorbate 80. This adjuvant is designed to enhance the magnitude and breadth of the immune response, allowing for a lower dose of antigen to be used (dose-sparing) while providing protection against potential pandemic strains of avian influenza. Prepandrix was the first pre-pandemic H5N1 vaccine to receive marketing authorization from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2008.
