Overview

Audenz is a monovalent, cell culture-derived, inactivated subunit influenza A (H5N1) vaccine adjuvanted with MF59. Developed by Seqirus (a CSL company), it is indicated for active immunization against the H5N1 subtype of influenza A virus in individuals 6 months of age and older. The vaccine is produced using Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells rather than traditional embryonated chicken eggs, which facilitates a more rapid manufacturing scale-up during a pandemic and avoids egg-adaptive mutations that can reduce vaccine effectiveness. The inclusion of the MF59 adjuvant, an oil-in-water emulsion, enhances the magnitude and breadth of the immune response, providing potential cross-protection against drifted H5N1 strains. Audenz was the first cell-based adjuvanted pandemic influenza vaccine to receive FDA approval.
