Overview

FluBlok is a recombinant hemagglutinin (HA) influenza vaccine developed by Protein Sciences Corporation (acquired by Sanofi in 2017). It is the first influenza vaccine produced using a baculovirus expression system in insect cells (expresSF+ cell line derived from Spodoptera frugiperda), which allows for an egg-free manufacturing process. The vaccine contains purified recombinant HA proteins from influenza virus strains (typically four for the quadrivalent formulation). Each strain is provided at a higher dose (45 μg) compared to the 15 μg found in standard-dose egg-based vaccines. FluBlok is indicated for active immunization for the prevention of seasonal influenza disease in adults 18 years of age and older.
