Overview

The Butantan Foundation's quadrivalent influenza vaccine is an inactivated, fragmented (split-virion) vaccine developed for the prevention of seasonal influenza. Produced using traditional egg-based technology, the vaccine incorporates antigens from four distinct influenza virus strains: two Influenza A subtypes (typically A/H1N1 and A/H3N2) and two Influenza B lineages (B/Victoria and B/Yamagata). The vaccine works by inducing the host's immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins, which are essential for viral attachment and release. This quadrivalent formulation provides broader protection compared to trivalent vaccines by covering both circulating B-strain lineages. It is a cornerstone of the Brazilian National Immunization Program (PNI) and is manufactured locally by the Butantan Foundation.
