An inactivated, split-virion vaccine component derived from an influenza B virus strain, developed by GSK. This monovalent preparation is a key constituent in the formulation of seasonal influenza vaccines, such as Fluarix and FluLaval. The production process involves growing the virus in embryonated chicken eggs, followed by inactivation with formaldehyde and disruption of the viral particles using a detergent (splitting). This process preserves the immunogenic viral proteins, primarily hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA), while removing much of the internal viral structure to reduce reactogenicity. Upon administration, the vaccine stimulates the host's immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against the specific B-strain lineage (either Victoria or Yamagata), providing protection against seasonal influenza B infection.
