Overview

Fluad is an MF59-adjuvanted, trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (aIIV3) originally developed by Novartis and now part of the CSL (Seqirus) portfolio. It is designed to prevent seasonal influenza infection by stimulating the production of antibodies against the hemagglutinin surface antigens of three influenza strains: two influenza A subtypes (typically H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B strain. The vaccine's distinguishing feature is the MF59 adjuvant, a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion that enhances the magnitude and breadth of the immune response, particularly in populations with immunosenescence or immature immune systems. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Fluad provides superior immunogenicity and efficacy compared to non-adjuvanted trivalent vaccines, especially in older adults and young children.
