Overview

This clinical trial intervention refers to the co-administration of an mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine (specifically Moderna's mRNA-1273) and a quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (specifically Seqirus's cell culture-based vaccine). Conducted by Duke University in collaboration with the CDC Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment (CISA) Project, the study evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of simultaneous versus sequential administration in healthy children and adults aged 5 years and older. The mRNA component works by delivering genetic instructions for the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to induce an immune response, while the influenza component provides inactivated viral antigens (hemagglutinin) from four circulating strains. Results from the trial indicated that concomitant administration is well-tolerated and does not result in significant immunological interference, supporting the feasibility of combined vaccination programs.
