Overview
VN-0104 is a quadrivalent live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) developed by Daiichi Sankyo in collaboration with AstraZeneca for the prevention of influenza. Administered as an intranasal spray, it contains four strains of influenza virus—two Type A and two Type B—that have been weakened and cold-adapted to replicate only in the cooler environment of the nasopharynx. This modality induces both local mucosal immunity (secretory IgA) in the respiratory tract and systemic immunity (serum IgG and T-cell responses), providing broad protection against seasonal influenza. It was approved in Japan in March 2023 under the brand name FluMist for use in individuals aged 2 to 18 years, marking the first nasal spray influenza vaccine approved in the country.
