Overview

The trivalent recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV3), marketed under the brand name Flublok, is a recombinant protein-based vaccine used for active immunization against influenza A and B viruses. Developed by Sanofi (following the acquisition of Protein Sciences Corporation), it was the first influenza vaccine produced without the use of chicken eggs, instead utilizing a baculovirus expression system in insect cell culture (ExpresSF+). The vaccine contains purified recombinant hemagglutinin (rHA) proteins from three influenza virus strains (typically two A subtypes and one B lineage) as recommended annually by the WHO. Each dose contains 45 μg of HA per strain, totaling 135 μg, which is three times the antigen content of standard-dose inactivated vaccines. It is indicated for individuals 9 years of age and older to prevent disease caused by influenza A virus subtypes and influenza B virus.
