Overview

The "influenza vaccine surface antigen adjuvanted with MF59" is an injectable, inactivated, split-virus (surface antigen) seasonal or pandemic flu vaccine formulated with the oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant MF59. The addition of the squalene-based adjuvant enhances and broadens the immune response to hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigens from selected circulating strains of the influenza virus. This results in higher antibody titers, improved seroprotection rates—especially among elderly and immunocompromised populations—and potentially broader cross-protection against drifted strains. The mechanism of action involves rapid induction of chemokines and cytokines at the injection site, recruitment of innate immune cells (monocytes, macrophages, granulocytes), enhanced uptake and presentation of antigens by dendritic cells, and robust activation of adaptive immunity even when CD4 T cell help is limited[1][2][3][4]. Developed originally by Novartis (now part of CSL/Seqirus), this class includes both trivalent (aTIV) and quadrivalent (aQIV) formulations for prevention of seasonal or pandemic flu[8].
