Overview

The H5N1 inactivated influenza vaccine is a monovalent, split-virion biologic vaccine developed by Sanofi Pasteur for the prevention of H5N1 influenza (avian flu). It was the first H5N1 vaccine to receive FDA approval in April 2007. The vaccine is derived from the A/Vietnam/1203/2004 (H5N1) virus strain and is produced in embryonated chicken eggs. It is indicated for adults aged 18 to 64 who are at increased risk of exposure to the H5N1 virus subtype. The vaccine is intended for use in a pandemic setting and has been stockpiled by the U.S. government as part of national preparedness efforts.
