Overview

The influenza virus vaccine (split virion, inactivated), quadrivalent, developed by the Institute of Medical Biology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS), is an inactivated vaccine designed to protect against seasonal influenza. It contains antigens from four distinct influenza virus strains: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). The vaccine is produced by cultivating the viruses in embryonated chicken eggs, followed by inactivation with formaldehyde and disruption (splitting) of the virus particles using detergents. This split-virion approach is intended to maintain high immunogenicity while reducing the risk of adverse reactions compared to whole-virus vaccines. Upon administration, the vaccine induces the production of hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibodies that target the viral hemagglutinin protein, thereby neutralizing the virus and preventing its attachment to host respiratory cells. It was approved by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in China for use in individuals aged 3 years and older.
