Overview

The influenza virus vector COVID-19 vaccine is a viral vector-based vaccine candidate that uses an engineered influenza virus as the delivery vehicle to express antigens from SARS-CoV-2, specifically the spike protein or its receptor-binding domain (RBD). This approach leverages the established safety and immunogenicity profile of live attenuated influenza vaccines while introducing genetic material encoding SARS-CoV-2 antigens. The goal is to induce both humoral and cellular immune responses against COVID-19. Preclinical studies have shown that a single immunization can elicit strong neutralizing antibody responses and provide protection in animal models. Clinical trials have evaluated intranasal administration of this platform, with at least one phase II trial registered for an intranasal spray formulation[7].
