Overview

Infuse Bone Graft is a combination medical device and biologic product consisting of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2, also known as dibotermin alfa) delivered on an absorbable collagen sponge (ACS). The rhBMP-2 is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring protein that induces new bone formation at the site of implantation by stimulating the differentiation of mesenchymal cells into osteoblasts. The absorbable collagen sponge acts as a carrier and scaffold for the protein and resulting bone growth. This system is used to promote bone healing in specific orthopedic procedures such as spinal fusion (in conjunction with interbody fusion devices), treatment of acute open tibial shaft fractures stabilized with intramedullary nail fixation, and certain oral-maxillofacial surgeries. Developed by Medtronic, it was first approved by the FDA in 2002 for spinal fusion procedures and subsequently for other indications[1][6][7][9].
