Overview

INGAP-peptide is a synthetic pentadecapeptide (15 amino acids) derived from the core active sequence (amino acids 104–118) of Islet Neogenesis Associated Protein (INGAP), a pancreatic cytokine belonging to the REG3 protein family. It acts as an islet neogenic and insulinotropic agent by stimulating the regeneration of pancreatic islets and increasing endogenous insulin secretion. The mechanism involves activation of signaling pathways such as Ras/Raf/ERK1/2 and PI3K/Akt in β-cells, likely via a G protein-coupled receptor. Preclinical studies have shown that INGAP-peptide can induce new islet formation and restore euglycemia in diabetic rodents; clinical trials have demonstrated improved glucose homeostasis in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients. Additionally, it has shown potential for enhancing nerve regeneration in peripheral neuropathy models[1][6][7][8]. The drug was developed through research at McGill University and Eastern Virginia Medical School; Exsulin Corp. has sponsored clinical development[2][5].
