Overview

Ingavirin is an orally bioavailable small molecule antiviral primarily used in Russia and some other countries for the treatment of influenza (A and B) and acute respiratory viral infections, including the common cold. Its mechanism of action is multifaceted: it inhibits viral replication by interfering with the virus's ability to replicate its RNA, thereby reducing viral load within infected host cells. Ingavirin also stimulates innate immunity by increasing interferon levels in blood to physiological norms, normalizing reduced α-interferon production by leukocytes, and stimulating γ-interferon production. It has demonstrated broad-spectrum antiviral activity against various human respiratory viruses in preclinical studies. The drug was originally developed for flu prophylaxis and treatment but has also been investigated as a potential agent against other viral infections such as COVID-19 due to its complex mechanism involving interference with cellular RNA-binding proteins that interact with coronavirus nucleocapsid proteins[1][2][4][5][6][7][8].
