Overview

Inhaled corticosteroids + short-acting β-agonists (ICS + SABA) is a fixed-dose combination therapy delivered via inhaler for the treatment of asthma. This combination includes an inhaled corticosteroid (such as budesonide) to reduce airway inflammation and a short-acting β2-adrenergic agonist (such as albuterol/salbutamol) to provide rapid bronchodilation by relaxing airway smooth muscle. The dual mechanism allows both immediate symptom relief and ongoing anti-inflammatory control. ICS+SABA combinations are indicated for the relief of acute asthma symptoms and reduction in risk of exacerbations, particularly in patients with mild asthma who may not require daily maintenance therapy but benefit from as-needed use[2][4][5]. The most prominent example is Airsupra (albuterol/budesonide), approved for use in adults with asthma[2]. These products simplify regimens by ensuring that every dose of reliever medication also delivers anti-inflammatory therapy.
