Overview

Inhaled enoxaparin is an investigational formulation of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) being developed by researchers at Istanbul University for the treatment of COVID-19-related respiratory complications. Delivered via a soft mist inhaler, the drug is intended to address the localized coagulopathy and inflammation observed in the lungs of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and hypoxemia. By providing high concentrations of enoxaparin directly to the pulmonary system, the therapy aims to inhibit microthrombosis and modulate the inflammatory response while potentially reducing the risk of systemic bleeding compared to parenteral administration. Enoxaparin acts primarily by binding to antithrombin III, enhancing its ability to neutralize Factor Xa and thrombin (Factor IIa).
