Inhaled Lipid Cisplatin (ILC) is a novel, sustained release formulation of cisplatin in a nanoscale lipid-based complex administered via inhalation. It is designed to deliver high levels of cisplatin directly to the lungs while minimizing systemic exposure and related toxicities. Cisplatin works by inhibiting DNA synthesis through three mechanisms: attaching alkyl groups to DNA bases, forming cross-links in DNA preventing separation for synthesis or transcription, and inducing nucleotide mispairing leading to mutations. ILC was primarily developed for the treatment of pulmonary metastases in osteosarcoma patients, with potential applications in other lung cancers.
