Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Inhaled nanoparticle remdesivir is a specialized formulation of the broad-spectrum antiviral nucleotide analog remdesivir (GS-5734), developed by Biomed Industries for the treatment of COVID-19. Remdesivir acts as a prodrug that is intracellularly metabolized into its active triphosphate form, which competes with adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for incorporation into the viral RNA strand by the SARS-CoV-2 RNA-directed RNA polymerase (RdRp). This incorporation leads to delayed chain termination during viral RNA synthesis, effectively halting viral replication. The nanoparticle inhalation delivery system is designed to target the drug directly to the respiratory tract, aiming to achieve high local concentrations in the lungs—the primary site of SARS-CoV-2 infection—while potentially reducing systemic exposure and the toxicity associated with intravenous administration.
