Inhibitor BEA388 is an experimental small molecule HIV-1 protease inhibitor. It belongs to a class of C-terminally duplicated inhibitors designed to target the HIV-1 protease enzyme, which is critical for the maturation of infectious HIV particles. The molecule features two central hydroxy groups that mimic the transition state of the enzyme's natural substrate cleavage reaction. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that BEA388 possesses high potency, with Ki values in the 100 picomolar range. It was primarily developed in an academic research context at Uppsala University to explore structure-activity relationships and improve the binding affinity of protease inhibitors against resistant strains of HIV.
