Iniparib (BSI-201, also known as SAR240550) is a novel investigational anti-cancer agent that was initially thought to act as a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor. However, subsequent studies have shown that it does not possess characteristics typical of the PARP inhibitor class. Its exact mechanism of action remains unclear but is believed to involve induction of DNA damage (as indicated by gamma-H2AX), cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase, and potentiation of the effects of DNA-damaging agents in tumor cells. Iniparib has been studied primarily in combination with chemotherapeutic agents such as gemcitabine and carboplatin for various cancers including triple-negative breast cancer and ovarian cancer[1][4][5][8]. Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analog used as chemotherapy.
