Overview

This investigational combination therapy consists of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (HUC-MSCs) seeded within an injectable collagen scaffold. Developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the therapy is designed to treat diabetic erectile dysfunction by promoting the regeneration of corpus cavernosum smooth muscle and reducing cavernous fibrosis. The HUC-MSCs are multipotent cells that exert therapeutic effects through the paracrine secretion of growth factors and cytokines, while the injectable collagen scaffold serves as a biocompatible delivery vehicle that enhances cell retention and survival at the injection site. The treatment is administered via intracavernous injection and has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials (NCT02745808) to assess safety and preliminary efficacy in improving erectile function.
