Overview

INO-4500 is a DNA vaccine candidate developed to prevent infection from the Lassa virus, which causes Lassa fever, an acute viral hemorrhagic illness endemic in West Africa. The vaccine encodes the Lassa lineage IV glycoprotein precursor and is delivered intradermally followed by electroporation using a proprietary device. Preclinical studies demonstrated that INO-4500 elicits both humoral and cellular immune responses and provides short- and long-term protection against lethal Lassa virus challenge in non-human primates. Clinical development included Phase 1b trials in West Africa to assess safety and immunogenicity. The program was fully funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). As of November 2022, development for this indication has been discontinued[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
