Overview

INO-4700 is an investigational DNA plasmid vaccine candidate developed by Inovio Pharmaceuticals, in collaboration with GeneOne Life Science, for the prevention of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), a respiratory disease caused by the MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The vaccine is designed to deliver genetic sequences encoding the MERS-CoV spike protein into host cells, thereby inducing both humoral (antibody) and cellular (T-cell) immune responses. It is administered intradermally using Inovio's proprietary CELLECTRA electroporation device, which facilitates the entry of the DNA plasmid into cells. Although Phase 1 and Phase 1b/2a clinical trials demonstrated that the vaccine was well-tolerated and immunogenic, the development program was discontinued in November 2022 after a two-dose regimen failed to meet the specific criteria for further advancement set by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
