Inonotus obliquus polysaccharides (IOPS) are bioactive polysaccharide compounds extracted from the Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus). IOPS are being investigated for a wide range of biological activities including antitumor, antioxidant, antiviral, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic effects. [1, 3] The mechanism of action is multifaceted and depends on the condition being treated; it includes inhibiting the binding and absorption of viruses, modulating the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway in the context of diabetes, and exerting anti-inflammatory effects through the NF-κB and MAPK pathways. [3, 5, 12] Primarily researched by academic institutions like Tianjin University, IOPS are in the preclinical research phase, with investigations limited to in vitro and animal studies. [13] No specific brand names or approved pharmaceutical formulations currently exist. It has been investigated for conditions including type 2 diabetes, cancer, various viral infections, chronic pancreatitis, and toxoplasmosis.
