Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Inorganic nitrate and nitrite are water-soluble compounds that serve as substrates for nitric oxide (NO) production through a pathway independent of the traditional NO synthase enzymes. This combination has demonstrated therapeutic potential in various cardiovascular and metabolic conditions, including heart failure, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. Unlike organic nitrates, inorganic nitrate/nitrite therapy does not lead to tolerance with chronic use, making it potentially more suitable for long-term treatment. Common sources include green leafy vegetables, with beetroot juice being frequently used in clinical studies.
