Overview

Inositol hexaphosphate + myo-inositol is a combination dietary supplement consisting of two naturally occurring compounds: inositol hexaphosphate (IP6, also known as phytic acid) and myo-inositol. Both are found abundantly in plants and mammalian cells. This combination has been studied for its potential health benefits, particularly for metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus and for cancer prevention and adjunctive therapy. Mechanistically, the combination is thought to regulate insulin secretion, modulate serum leptin concentrations, reduce food intake and weight gain, improve lipid profiles (increase HDL cholesterol; decrease triglycerides), attenuate vascular damage by reducing red cell distribution width, preserve liver function, reduce oxidative stress by lowering reactive oxygen species production, enhance anti-inflammatory effects via modulation of cytokines (such as TNF-α and IL-β), promote natural killer cell function (immunity), chelate free radicals to prevent cellular degeneration/carcinogenesis, inhibit cancer cell proliferation through G0/G1 arrest and differentiation induction of malignant cells back toward normal phenotype[1][5][6][7][8]. The supplement has shown promise in preclinical studies for improving diabetic indices (e.g., blood glucose control), supporting cardiovascular health by improving serum analytes related to heart disease risk[7], reducing chemotherapy-induced side effects[5], enhancing quality of life during cancer treatment[8], suppressing chronic inflammatory diseases including those relevant to dental medicine[6], preventing kidney stone formation via inhibition of calcium oxalate crystallization[6], and providing antioxidant protection. While widely available as a dietary supplement with an excellent safety profile at typical doses due to its presence in regular diets,[8] large-scale clinical trials are still needed to confirm efficacy at therapeutic doses.
