Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Insoluble konjac glucomannan (iKGM) is a dietary fiber derived from konnyaku, a traditional Japanese food made from the konjac plant (*Amorphophallus konjac*). Unlike soluble glucomannan, iKGM is insoluble and acts primarily as a prebiotic. Research indicates that iKGM suppresses weight gain by modulating the gut microbiota, specifically increasing the abundance of *Akkermansia muciniphila*. This microbial shift leads to elevated levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as butyrate and propionate, which in turn stimulate the production of the appetite-suppressing hormone leptin. This cascade results in reduced food intake and increased fecal volume, making it a potential candidate for obesity prevention and weight management.
