IMPACT (Instant MSC Product accompanying Autologous Chondron Transplantation) is a combined cell therapy developed by the University Medical Center Utrecht for the treatment of focal articular cartilage defects in the knee. The product consists of a combination of allogeneic, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and autologous chondrons (chondrocytes with their native pericellular matrix) isolated from the patient's own debrided cartilage. Administered in a single-stage surgical procedure, the allogeneic MSCs act as trophic signaling units that stimulate the autologous chondrons to regenerate hyaline-like cartilage tissue, rather than the MSCs themselves differentiating into cartilage. This approach aims to provide a rapid, one-step alternative to traditional two-stage autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) procedures.
