Overview

Instat is a topical hemostatic agent composed of purified bovine dermal collagen, designed for use in surgical procedures to control bleeding when conventional methods like pressure or ligatures are ineffective. Developed by Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, Instat provides a mechanical matrix that facilitates the rapid adhesion and aggregation of platelets upon contact with blood. This interaction triggers the intrinsic coagulation cascade, leading to the formation of a stable fibrin clot. The product is biocompatible and fully absorbable, typically being resorbed by the body within 4 to 6 weeks. It is available in various forms, such as sponges and pads, and is widely utilized across surgical specialties including general, vascular, and orthopedic surgery.
