CSII-Sun Yat-sen University-type 2 diabetes mellitus refers to the use of Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII) as a short-term intensive insulin therapy (SIIT) protocol, which has been a major research focus at Sun Yat-sen University. This intervention involves the administration of insulin via an external pump for a duration of 2 to 4 weeks in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. Clinical studies led by researchers at Sun Yat-sen University have demonstrated that this short-term intensive intervention can lead to significant recovery of beta-cell function and induce long-term glycemic remission, allowing some patients to maintain target blood glucose levels without the need for oral medications for extended periods. The protocol is often evaluated as a standalone therapy or in combination with other agents such as GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g., liraglutide) to preserve metabolic benefits.
