This is a combination of two peptide hormones, insulin and somatostatin. Insulin is a hormone produced by pancreatic beta cells that lowers blood glucose by promoting cellular uptake of glucose and inhibiting hepatic glucose production. Somatostatin, produced by the hypothalamus and other tissues such as the pancreas, inhibits the release of several hormones including growth hormone, insulin, and glucagon. When used together as a drug combination (not commonly available as a fixed pharmaceutical product), this pairing may be considered in research or specialized clinical settings to modulate both glycemic control (via insulin) and counterregulatory hormone secretion (via somatostatin). Somatostatin can decrease endogenous secretion of both insulin and glucagon; exogenous administration with insulin may be explored in rare cases such as refractory diabetic ketoacidosis or for experimental purposes[2][7]. The mechanism involves direct effects on their respective receptors—insulin receptor agonism for metabolic regulation, and somatostatin receptor agonism to inhibit multiple endocrine secretions.
