The insulin B-chain is a 30-amino acid peptide that constitutes one of the two chains (A and B) forming the mature insulin hormone. In humans, it corresponds to amino acids 25–54 of proinsulin. The A- and B-chains are linked by disulfide bonds to form functional insulin[2][6][9]. The isolated B-chain has been studied as an immunogen in vaccine research for type 1 diabetes prevention and as a tool in biochemical studies[1][5]. It plays a critical role in binding to the insulin receptor; key residues on the B-chain mediate this interaction, especially at its C-terminal region[8]. As an isolated peptide or synthetic fragment (e.g., InsB(9–23)), it is used experimentally for immunological studies and as a standard in analytical chemistry[7][4].
