Overview

Insulin degludec is an ultra-long-acting basal human insulin analog developed by Novo Nordisk for the treatment of diabetes mellitus, including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes[5][8][3]. It is administered via subcutaneous injection and provides a slow, steady release of insulin to help control blood glucose levels over more than 24 hours[1][5][6]. Its unique mechanism involves the formation of multihexamers in subcutaneous tissue, resulting in a depot from which monomers are slowly released into circulation[6]. Insulin degludec mimics endogenous human insulin by binding to the insulin receptor and promoting glucose uptake into tissues while inhibiting hepatic glucose production[8]. In type 1 diabetes, it must be used with short-acting insulins; in type 2 diabetes, it can be combined with other insulins or oral antidiabetic agents[2].
