Insulin Dilution Buffer is a pharmaceutical-grade vehicle produced by Novo Nordisk, primarily used as a diluent for insulin preparations or as a matching placebo in clinical research. In a study conducted by the Medical University of Vienna, it was utilized as the intranasal placebo control in a Phase 2 trial (NCT02502201) evaluating the impact of central insulin signaling on hepatic lipid content in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The buffer is formulated to be chemically and physically identical to the vehicle used in Actrapid insulin—containing excipients such as glycerol, metacresol, and zinc chloride—but lacks the active insulin hormone. This ensures the integrity of double-blind study designs investigating the metabolic effects of intranasal insulin delivery on the liver, myocardium, and skeletal muscle.
